Dr. Peter Maynard, Senior Partner of Peter D. Maynard Counsel & Attorneys, is highly regarded in the fields of business law, international commercial arbitration, mediation, litigation, human rights, and asset tracing and recovery. He has practiced law for forty-seven years, eight of which he worked as Legal Adviser to The Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Dr. Maynard also has extensive experience as an arbitrator.
Prior to becoming a lawyer, he served as an economist and later, a diplomat, at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
Dr. Maynard is known for his international expertise and experience, which includes being called to the Bar in several jurisdictions – including England and Wales, The Bahamas, Trinidad and Tobago, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, St. Lucia, Antigua and Barbuda, and pro hac vice the Turks and Caicos Islands. Dr. Maynard is a member of the Honorable Society of Gray’s Inn and has a passion for education. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree (Hons.) from McGill University, a Master’s Degree in Law from Cambridge University, and a PhD in international law from John Hopkins University. He also attended Cornell University, The Sorbonne, and The University of Toronto. He headed the Law Department at The University of The Bahamas for about eight years, and has taught at both The University of The West Indies Faculty of Law in Barbados, and Eugene Dupuch Law School.
An Immediate Past President of the fixty-sixth jurisdiction of the Commonwealth Lawyers Association, and Founder of the Alternative Dispute Resolution and Investment Summit: Caribbean, Latin America and Other Emerging Markets, which has operated for a decade- he also serves as a Member, Director and Chair of a plethora of prominent international organizations. These include but are not limited to: the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague, and the International and Western Hemisphere Arbitration Adjudication and Mediation Center (IWHAAM).
Dr. Maynard has also served as an Acting Bahamas Supreme Court Justice and is known for implementing efficient case management and eliminating the preexisting backlog of civil and commercial cases for Freeport and the Northern Region of The Bahamas.
Additionally, he has served as President of The Bahamas Bar Association, National President for The Bahamas of the World Jurist Association, and Deputy Chairman of the Regional Judicial and Legal Services Commission of the Caribbean Court of Justice.
Dr. Maynard supports a myriad of pro bono organizations and serves as The Legal Director of The Red Cross. He is a fluent speaker of ten languages and practices professional and creative writing, table tennis, and yoga in his spare time.
